Follow the Journey

One of ESA’s staff members, Josie, recently attended the 3-day Recycle Colorado Conference.

Also representing our mountain town area was Foothills Recycling Owner, Megan Mitchell, and new owner of South Platte Services (formerly Shirley Septic), Doug Atkinson, as well as a showing for our very own Executive Director, Wendy!

The event offered a powerful opportunity to collaborate, meet and converse with environmental leaders from across the state on the future of waste diversion.

What are some of the BIG takeaways from the conference?!

1. The Reality of Recycling: Proper recycling effectively keeps materials out of landfills and drives economic and job growth across Colorado- something our mountain community certainly has room to improve on.

2. The Importance of Composting: Organics and food scrap collection remain critical to waste reduction. The state is actively working on improving composting infrastructure, accessibility, and contamination control.

3. Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR): Municipalities and organizations are working hard to establish free community recycling programs, which will be very beneficial to our mountain communities once in play.

4. Supporting reuse programs is necessary: Recycling is great and all but an even BETTER route is reuse. Supporting programs like a Refill Station helps reduce single-use production while keeping that container out of the landfill…good thing we have one in our very own community 😄

Colorado is a beautiful place to live and there are many people behind the scenes that are doing their part to keep it as so.

We are hiring a Refill Station Program Manager!

We have a new, updated list for our Spring Clean Recycling Event so what does that mean?! We are accepting even MORE hard to recycle items!

So what have we added?
•Batteries: household & car (view the 2nd image to see what exactly that includes)
•Paint: we are NOW accepting lacquer & stain
•Plastic film & plastic bags: please NO chip-like bags, think stretchy by poking your finger through. Film must be clean- NO food or liquid residue

Evergreen local artist Ron Isaacson invites you to experience sustainable creativity at his upcoming exhibition.

Discover “Amazar Tales,” a striking showcase of eco-conscious artwork running from May 29th through August 16th.

The Jefferson County Sustainability Commission “Spring into Sustainabilty Challenge” is underway and you need to join in on the fun!

This interactive competition is to support the goals of Jeffco’s Climate Action Plan and to help raise awareness of the simple budget saving and planet healthy actions we can all take as an individual.

ESA and ECAG (Evergreen Community Action Group) hosted an engaging Evergreen Environmental Forum last month in celebration of Earth Day 🌎

We heard from experts across our community, including: Jefferson County Sustainability Commission, local haulers and recyclers (Foothills Recycling, Mountain View Waste, and South Platte Services-formerly Shirley Septic), educators, and nonprofit leaders like Eco-Cycle.

They shared updates on local sustainability initiatives and practical ways residents can reduce waste and support environmental efforts.

The event featured a panel discussion with audience Q&A- sparking ideas for how our mountain community can continue to grow as a leader in sustainability and waste reduction.

Before the panel, Evergreen High School students presented their work as part of the Climate Seal of Literacy program - an initiative preparing students to take action on climate issues.

Their projects highlighted topics like decarbonization, wildfire mitigation, and community engagement.

Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to a meaningful conversation about our community’s future!

It’s great to see all these faces wanting to keep Evergreen- GREEN. 🫶😄🌲

In our world- Earth Day is everyday and education is at the core of everything we do here at Evergreen Sustainability Alliance.

The children are our future and it’s amazing to see how curious they all are, soaking in what they are being taught when we come do a puppet show at their school or show them how to separate food scraps from what goes into the landfill at lunchtime.

Education is everything and we are happy to do it!

Yes, you are reading it right, we are ACCEPTING styrofoam and scrap metal.

Please note there are costs to dropping off TV’s (no matter the size) + CRT monitors. These fees directly go to our hauler to dismantle & recycle as these items are more costly in doing so compared to other electronics.

Ready to turn your kitchen scraps into garden gold?

Imagine transforming your morning coffee grounds and potato peels into the secret sauce for the lushest, most vibrant garden around.

As we dream of spring blooms and summer harvests, the real magic starts right in your kitchen!

Step 1: The Easy Stash 🍎
Keep a small bin on your kitchen counter or a container in the freezer. Toss in those veggie scraps, eggshells, and fruit peels. It’s not waste—it’s “pre-compost”!

Step 2: Let the magic happen🪄
Once your bin is full, it’s time to drop off. A1 Organics will pick up our collection bin, head down to Denver & begin mixing the food scraps in with other piles to encourage the breakdown process.

Step 3: The Garden Glow-Up 🌻
When that process is finished, you’re left with nutrient-dense soil that acts like a multivitamin for your plants. This soil will be given to you come May, up to 15 gallons worth! Your tomatoes will be juicier, your flowers brighter, and your soil happier.

Don’t let those nutrients go to waste in a landfill—let’s grow something beautiful together!

We have some amazing guest speakers lined up for this event and we want you, the community, to be well informed when it comes to trash, recycling, compost and sustainability in the Evergreen area.

Starting THIS Saturday, we will be open EVERY Saturday for now on (weather permitted)!

WAHOO! We can’t wait to see you and look forward to meeting new people in the community that have been looking at ways to reduce their single container waste, plus you will be supporting other small Colorado businesses.

Also, we hand select what products we carry, paying close attention to what kind of ingredients are used to make said product.

This means you can count on high quality and hopefully it keeps your mind at ease when using our products on various surfaces within your home and on your body.

For our composters out there, make sure to remove ANY AND ALL food labels from your food scraps before tossing the scraps into the compost bin because these labels are in fact, not compostable.

Food labels are made from a plastic material and will not break down during the composting process which is why they are consider a contamination.

If you feel like you’ll forget when using the food, try to make it a point to take off all labels as soon as you begin to put your groceries away after returning from the store.

It’s okay if you don’t have the process perfectly down. Soon enough, taking these labels off will be second nature.

Spring Clean is back! Mark those calendars and make sure you put these items aside so they can be properly recycled.

We are still in conversation with some vendors so we can collect more items. Once that is figured out, we will add the items to the list!
