Composting at School
ESA’s Green Schools program brings hands-on sustainability to local schools through student-driven composting efforts supported by staff and parents. What started as a simple idea is now active in six Evergreen-area schools, where students help reduce waste and build lifelong environmental habits. By giving kids ownership of their impact, we’re growing a culture of responsibility that reaches beyond the cafeteria and into the community. If a first grader can compost, you can too — and we welcome families, teachers, and volunteers to get involved.

Share Tables
Share tables are being incorporated into Green Schools so any unopened, uneaten food can be given to other students or sent to local food banks.

Student Led
Most Evergreen schools use a student led model to help monitor the collection bins and prevent contamination. Parent volunteers then take the collections to the local compost dumpster.

Start Composting at Your School
ESA partners with local schools to introduce student-led composting and food rescue at lunchtime. This initiative cuts food waste, reduces your school’s carbon footprint, and gives students hands-on experience in sustainability. With simple steps like waste audits, clear collection stations, and volunteer support, your school can turn everyday food scraps into a powerful learning opportunity and big environmental impact.
